Phillip writes about how his friend Mouse, a person serving life without parole, who murdered a prison guard in 2017. While Phillip does not condone his friend’s action, he explains how the hopelessness caused by serving life contributed to the violence and could have been prevented if people serving life had an opportunity for release as an incentive to refrain from violence.
